Dream Weapons present: SATURDAY AT THE SWEET SPOT C90

As some of you may have noticed, it’s been dead quiet here for a while. Unfortunately I have less time to spend on this blog now - and in the foreseeable future. The good news is that Crazy Monkey has got more guest mixes up his sleeve for us, so there will be some activity here.

But the other evening I felt like giving you a sign of life. Which had me compiling a follow-up-mix out of a list of various jazz I have collected. Saturdays at the Sweet Spot is busier than Sundays, and this is of course Sunday at the Sweet Spot’s livelier companion piece. A little more grooves, tempo and intensity, but otherwise in the same ballpark as its sibling. Just a little something for you melophiles to enjoy -Moahaha

Btw: While the design is very 1950's, the musical content is about three thirds seventies, two sixties tracks and one from the eighties. I just love the esthetics of that era.

1 Jimmy Heath - Heritage Hum
2 Enrico Rava - Pupa O Crisalide
3 Neil Ardley - Folk Dance No 2
4 Sadik Hakim - Down by the Ferry Dock
5 John Lee & Gerry Brown - Rise On
6 Phil Upchurch - Sausalito Blues
7 Oregon - Margueritte
8 Donald Byrd - Elijah (version without vocals)
9 Hadley Caliman - Quadrivium

10 Johnny Scott Quintet - Variation 3 - Flute
11 Mal Waldron - Home Again (alt. version)
12 The Descendants Of Mike And Phoebe - Chick Chick
13 Patrice Gelsi - Chant D’Ailleurs
14 Cedric Im Brooks - Africa Calling
15 Richard Davis - Milktrain
16 Afro-Blues Quintet Plus One - South Side Habit/Mirror Image
17 Gunther Fischer Quintett - Erinnerung an Jürgen H.

Dream Weapons present: Xmas Delights XIV C60

-And I just wrote that I wouldn’t have time for compiling another Xmas Delights:). But I had all of these songs in a longer playlist titled «Christmas 2025», so in record time I compiled this from selecting 22 lovely tunes from those six hours. Dream Weapons present: SUNDAY AT THE SWEET SPOT VOL. 1 C90

Sunday at the Sweet Spot is a club - or a bar concept I wish I could have hung out at… like today. Sometimes, or maybe often just hanging out while listening to some good-natured jazz-groves is just what the doctor ordered. As I do not have an option like that anywhere nearby, I made this one up. Although you might recognize a couple of names here, it's all pretty much unheard material. As always. Not much more to say really. Try it. It's very nice -Moahaha

1 Pierre-Alain Dahan - Slowrama
2 Walter Bishop, Jr. - Coral Keys
3 Sahib Shihab - Uma Fita de Tres Cores
4 Mario Molino And His Group - For Me

Dream Weapons present: OUROBOROS C90

There is quite literally an infinite supply of unheard musical treasures of the past to dig for, discover, love and to share. Here’s fourteen highly spirited grooves from the wide world of Jazz, 1967-1984. It’s been quite some time since last I shared one of these, and the gems have been piling up. Although the bulk of my selection originates from the West, many of the tunes are inspired by various folk traditions of the East. As often before, I might add. I’ve always had a soft spot for musical fusions of this sort.  It never fails to lift my spirits -Moahaha

1 Paul Winter Consort - My Horse Knows the Way
2 Jef Gilson - Espagnolade
3 Sadao Watanabe - Pastoral
4 Larry T. and the Family  - Patty
5 Phil Woods - Theme from 'Samson and Delilah'
6 Art Farmer - Art For Lunch
7 Peter Yellin - Mebakush

8 The Lightmen Plus One - On the Road Home
9 Boomerang / Бумеранг - India / Indiya
10 Amancio D'Silva - Jaipur
11 Reggie Andrews & The Fellowship - Chant
12 Grachan Moncur III - Aco Dei de Madrugada

-also while collecting all these links, I noticed I had used Harold Mabern - Alex the Great for both Sunspots & Ten Portals...! Which is why I'm offering Paz - The Buddha as its replacement for the latter mix. Just click on the image underneath and download the song. You'll find the edited cover art attached to the mp3-file (download button on the left).

+a couple of weeks later I found another one: I've used Hiroshi Sato - Jōdo for both City Lights and A Trip to the Garden. I'm attaching a link to (the much better fit) Okay Temiz & Johnny Dyani - Orient Trip as replacement for the latter mix:

Dream Weapons present: TWILIGHT IN JAZZVILLE C60

How I would have loved to wander the fictional streets of late 1950’s Jazzville after sunset. On a whim I’d walk into a hip little bar, or a stylish nightclub. While listening to the sound of chattering and clinking glass, a group of musicians enter the stage. The songstress and her small ensemble alternate between Torch Songs, understated Cool Jazz and assorted delights in that ballpark. The deep, slow and haunting Misty and ‘Round Midnight type of repertoire. Yet another obvious case of false nostalgia (see Anemoia), and as always before, music is to blame.

All the talent that has slipped through the cracks has always been Dream Weapons’ raison d'être. But it’s also a little saddening to think about. Maybe you know the names of a couple of the singers or bandleaders here, but they are mostly long forgotten and virtually unheard (Helen Merrill is an exception, but not this song). Yet to me the ten songs presented here are all perfect tens - and every tune sound like a classic -Moahaha

1 Fran Jeffries - Out of This World, 1960
2 Herb Geller - Silver Rain, 1954
3 Lynn Taylor - Wandering Heart, 1958
4 Bob Cooper - Sunset, 1955
5 Helen Merrill - It's A Lazy Afternoon, 1957
6 Metropolitan Jazz Quartet - Night Song, 1958
7 Lu Ann Simms - The End of the Line, 1952
8 Johnny Eaton - The Lamp is Low, 1957
9 Cora Lee Day - My Crying Hour, 1960

10 The Marty Paich Octet - Jacqueline, 1956
11 Debby Moore - Come On Home to Me, 1959
12 The Brothers Candoli - It Never Entered My Mind, 1957
13 Dorothy Dandridge - The Touch Of Your Lips, 1958
14 Jack Montrose With Bob Gordon - April's Fool, 1955
15 Donna Brooks - Full Moon and Empty Arms, 1956
16 Paul Quinichette - Tropical Intrigue, 1955
17 The Lewis Sisters - Just Friends, 1959
18 Terry Gibbs - Memories of You, 1957
19 Pinky Winters - Cool Sazerac, 1954

Dream Weapons present: OBSIDIAN ROCKS C90

No, I’ve not compiled the musical equivalent to a volcanic eruption. It’s closer to the polished rocks or handmade figures made from the volcanic glass that naturally occurs when lava rapidly cools. Yes, it’s another mix of fusions between the Jazz and various styles of music that seemingly everyone was into during the 1970’s. Sometimes resembling World Music, sometimes spiritual, often groovin’, always radiating warmth. Humankind at its very best -Moahaha

1 The Bridge - Puls
2 Georges Arvanitas - Arc En Ciel
3 Hadley Caliman - The Latin Thing
4 Phil Upchurch & Tennyson Stephens - Black Maybe

Dream Weapons present: THE WELCOME PUNCH C60:

I threw a party for my birthday not long ago, and on the cover you can see me eagerly awaiting the arrival of my first guests. The idea was to compile music for that first hour at a party - or any kind of festive gathering. There’s a lot of considerations to be taken. It’s basically background music for conversing, but it needs to be fun and hold a semi-danceable beat - although no one’s gonna dance just yet. If you don’t have a party planned sometime in the near future, pour yourself a drink, play this  - and pretend. That’s the magic of music -Moahaha

-For the four of you that downloaded the mix shortly after I posted it: I had to take down and re-upload everything, as there was a strange "skip-issue" with song no. 4 (White Salt) - now replaced with Sahara

1 Franco Micalizzi - L'ultimo Cacciatore (Seq. 5)
2 Jef Gilson feat. Célia - Le Blanc Coton
3 Jackie DeShannon - Effervescent Blue
4 Hans Stockhold - Sahara
5 Kirsti Sparboe - Hvem Har Sagt Jeg Savner Deg
6 Catherine Spaak - Sogni E Niente Più
7 Jacques Loussier  - Clara's Jerk
8 Ellie Greenwich - You Don't Know
9 Retta Young & The Devotions - The Dawning of Love
10 Orkest Ruud Bos - Sexy Music
11 Maria Creuza - Amor de Mae
12 Etienne Cap and his Orchestra - Luna Di Miele

13 Hagood Hardy & the Montage - I'll Take Love

Dream Weapons present: THE TWIN EARTH C60

-the Twin Earth is just me compiling in easy mode. Meaning another hour of Soul Jazz, Jazz Fusion, Latin Jazz etc...  Music recorded in between 1969-1981 that seamlessly grooves along from one tune to the next. Each new track has something unique to offer but I also feel that they are somewhat unified. Super likable soundscapes of the sort that I’m pretty much always in the mood for. There’s simply an astounding amount of unheard gems (primarily) from the seventies in these genres for me to choose from. Yes, I know I’ve said this before, but that's because it’s true -Moahaha

Btw: Life is even more complicated than I am used to (but I'm good), and I'm not really in a "music discovery mode" nowadays. Also I have less time to make these mixes as well. Every time I've shared a mix lately, I've been thinking that it will take (quite) a while until I come up with a next one. This time it's no different. But I've been wrong many times before, so who knows:)

1 Young-Holt Unlimited - The Devil Made Me Do Dat
2 Beaver & Krause - Another Part Of Time
3 Trudy Pitts - Organology
4 Nat Adderley - Grey Moss
5 Magog - Lock

Dream Weapons present: (STOP AND) SMELL THE ROSES C60

It’s summer and sunny outside. I feel that it's time for another golden hour of oldies.  Eleven songs and (as often before) eleven matching instrumentals. Like my previous «A Million Dreams Ago» this collection contains nothing but oh so lovely, long forgotten* non-rockin’ delights from the 1950’s. And that’s what the world needs right now. Dream Weapons present: DEEP INSIDE A DREAM C90

We're falling down the rabbit hole. Transporting you into a wonderfully (and troublingly) surreal state. Sweet dreams gently interrupted by waves of unease. Like an adventure taking place inside of your subconscious. Or like someone is trying to tell you a half-remembered tale. Dream Weapons present: NOCTURNAL C90

«Through the darksome forest roam, Luna breaks through oaks and bushes» is a quote from Goethe's poem «The Beautiful Night». I wanted to capture a vibe like that in music somehow. Dream Weapons present: INTO BLISS C90

One reason as to why I compile all these jazz-mixes of pure bliss and no atonal blowouts just occurred to me: This is largely how I present jazz to others in real life. Very few people I know are as deeply into all kinds of music as myself. Anything too free, avantgarde or invasive will just get in the way of conversation - and make them uncomfortable. Hell, in regards to my family, even the jazz collected here would give me weird looks. But my friends wouldn’t mind this. And I obviously love it, so «Into Bliss» is an attempt to… please everyone (except for my family) -Moahaha

1 Billy Gault - Aisha

Dream Weapons present: JAZU KISSA C90:

Unique to Japan, a jazu/jazz kissa are spaces where jazz music is played for dedicated listening rather than as backgrund music. As their "local" vibrant jazz scene feel somewhat overlooked and underappreciated, I thought I'd compile some of my favorite gems from 1970-1977. Quite similar to my previous jazz compilations really, except that’s it’s all originating from the Land of Rising Sun -Moahaha

...and while I have your attention: George Glass why runs the Groovy Library-blog just wrote about locating a bunch of unpublished or disappeared comments in a spam folder. So I looked around and located more than 30 completely normal comments (seven or eight of them were my own:) in this "spam folder" I had never noticed before. I don't know why this happens but they're all published - or republished now. So if you've commented and you're comments were either never published or seemingly removed - it's certainly not because I didn't appreciate you thanking me for the mix:)

Dream Weapons present: THE TREE HUGGERS C90

Reading about the origins of the term «tree hugger», I ended up compiling a tribute of sorts to the Chipko Movement in India*. Speaking in musical terms, it’s ninety minutes of instrumental acoustic «eastern-sounding world-vibes» of light and dark. A celebration of the good in mankind while mourning the evil deeds of the wicked, simultaneously. But that’s just me and how I tend to think about these things, I suppose. Music for both meditation and contemplation -Moahaha

Dream Weapons present: TEN PORTALS OF INITIATION C90

Ten Portals of Initiation to what? To some spiritual jazz and the likes, originating from some time in between 1970-1980, of course. It’s not as deep as it may appear. I simply kept the cover art’s original title and added a «Ten» in front. I’m afraid to credit the original artist, as I once got in trouble for doing so (but I think it’s public domain). The musical content will probably feel like the natural continuation of a dozen or so previous jazz-themed mixes of mine (to those of you already familiar with Dream Weapons). But the tunes are as exiting and wondrous as ever before -Moahaha

1 Sir Edward - Peace K.D
2 Charles Tolliver - On the Nile
3 Buddy Terry - Stealin’ Gold
4 Solar Plexus - Spanish Sahara
5 Rena Rama - Rumanian Folk Song

6 Billy Robinson - The Family
7 Toshiko Akiyoshi - Notorious Tourist from the East
8 Harold Mabern - Alex the Great
9 Juhani Aaltonen & Otto Donner - Och det går, det går
10 Henry Franklin - Cosmic Dwellers

If you enjoyed these ten portals, here's thirteen links to over fifteen hours more finely selected jazz in more or less similar modes: Terrestrial Planets, Sunspots, The Hot Space, Numina, Swaying Vibes, Selenian Gardens, I Am the Resurrection, Celestial Space Inn, Per Aspera ad Astra, Sun Sprites, Music of the Spheres, The High Priestess and Fourth World (alternatively press the jazz-tag and you’ll find about twice as much great jazz of all kinds)

Dream Weapons present: TERRESTRIAL PLANETS C90

As you may have noticed I’ve made quite a few 1970’s jazz-themed mixtapes. On Terrestrial Planets all the music presented were recorded sometime in between 1958-1968. My first from this era but probably not the last. With an illustration like this and the matching title - I was certain the cover would end up resembling a long lost Sun Ra release. I was wrong. Misleading art or not, I quite like the visual presentation nevertheless. More importantly here’s fifteen under-the-radar warbles of extraordinary beauty and a sense of mystery for you to immerse yourself in! -Moahaha

1 Soul Flutes - Trust In Me
2 Ahmad Jamal - This Terrible Planet
3 Sabu Martinez - Moon Black
4 Jack Wilson - Most Unsoulful Woman
5 Sahib Shihab - Charade
6 Wlodzimierz Nahorny - Ballada O Dwóch Serduszkach
7 Duke Pearson - Bedouin

Dream Weapons present: MALAISE C60

Pure and simple beauty is nice (but nothing pure is ever simple). I’m primarily more interested in an unsettling kind of beauty, though. I’m not sure why. Perhaps I find it more true to life. I do know I respond stronger to it emotionally. Well, that’s just me. Now let’s see if this collection of strangely alluring tunes touches a few kindred spirits out there as well -Moahaha

Dream Weapons present: SUNSPOTS C60

Here’s another hour of mostly laidback 1970’s jazz grooves. Spiritual, funky, eastern tinged, electrified, psychedelic etc... Yes, most of you should know this part of me by now. Seemingly I can discover gems such as these and present them to you for the rest of my life. I’m not gonna do that, but I’ll keep making variations over this theme long as I’m entertained by it myself. If you’ve enjoyed my previous jazz-themed mixes, you’ll enjoy Sunspots too. -Moahaha

Dream Weapons present: THE HOT SPACE C60

The concept of space in music is often associated with cold and desolate electronic soundscapes. However The Hot Space calls for far jazzier vibes. More specifically a 1970’s jazzgroove that's electrified with Moogs & stuff. By now you know I love this kind of stuff, and I will never grow tired of discovering yet another unheard gem from that time period. It feels like home somehow. La Vittima is lifted from an Italian giallo and Earl is from a Blaxploitation movie (plus a Library Music trio of tunes) - and I think the remaining tracks would have worked just as well in some movie really -Moahaha

3 Arakawa Yasuo & Shiji Shiroo - Sudden Rain In Kyo

5 Piotr Figiel Ensemble - I Want To Be Your Girl
6 Ed Bogas - Earl
