Dream Weapons present: TOTENTANZ C60

Christmas is over, and the new year is closing in on us. Here is a collection of up- to mid-tempo tunes to keep you entertained during the last few days of the year or even on new years eve. This mix takes a dip into some slower territory halfway trough side B, so you can refill your glasses, mingle or lean back to catch your breath before the final floor filler kicks you into the new year.

Best wishes for 2018 to all of you,
Sadhu Sadhu

Dream Weapons present: XMAS DELIGHTS VOL. VI C90

I’m running out of new ways to introduce the same concept for the sixth time in as many years, so I’ll quote myself from 2016 instead "My favorite Christmas tunes reminds why as a child the Yuletide used to be my favorite time of the year. An idealized daydream of what the festive season should be about - or once was"

-Yet another nostalgia-drenched mix containing a generous chunk of oldies plus jazzy or folk-oriented seasonal-songs. Now you've potentially got seven and a half hours of top notch xmas-delights to enjoy. Who would have thunk it was possible? Not me that’s for sure. Anyway I hope you have yourself an ultra-Merry Christmas! -Moahaha

Dream Weapons present: WINDSWEPT DAYDREAM C90

A loungier, perhaps kitschier reinterpretation of musique d’ameublement - or "furniture music" as Satie branded it. An almost relaxation tape to snuggle up on your sofa rather than for meditating. Alternatively it can just spin in the background while you enjoy a book, a drink or both in a comfortable chair. Should blend in whether on your own or if you’re having company. But what business is it of mine to suggest where or when this should be listened to? - None absolutely. I hope you’ll enjoy it though.

Dream Weapons present: WHATEVER HAPPENED TO HAPPY? C60 By DJ Lemon Fogg

“ Whatever Happened To Happy?” is a 60 min musical search for that elusive happy feeling; whether you prefer to dream on the lawn, take a drive, look at the view, feel the ocean breeze, be in love, catch a frisbee, or maybe just stay in bed and watch the sunrise. Dream Weapons present: STRINGWEAVER C60

Athough "Stringweaver" sort of resembles the title of a horror novel (and not a very good one), I imagine stringweavers as musicians soundweaving on their stringed instruments.

While making mixes I often place a few folkloric, acoustic-based instrumentals in between songs for breathing space. But I notice that for my own listening pleasure I tend to remove them from that context to make long playlists containing nothing but these "inbetweeners". So I figured others might appreciate some extended breathing space too. And here it is; an hour of the kind of tunes that I could listen to like… forever.

Enjoy.

Dream weapons present: FOURTH WORLD C90

Fused with either middle-eastern, latin, asian or african music + perhaps some rock, funk, folk, psychedelics and whatnot: jazz becomes jazz fusion, I guess. Loathed by purists (screw them anyway) and still slowly recovering from its self-inflicted late seventies reputation as show-offy, lifeless and smooth - but needless to say you won’t find any of that sort on this magic rug ride of swirling flutes, trippy percussion, hypnotic vibes and the like.

-Moahaha

Btw: I got my title from Hopi mythology. Did you know that Spider Grandmother caused a bamboo to grow into the sky and that it eventually emerged into the Fourth World? True story.

Dream weapons present: A TRAVELLER’S TALE C90

Whether an explorer, a journey through space or a road movie... any kind of voyage is a thankful theme to work with. While brazenly mixing exotica, anatolian pop, north african polyrhythms, arab maqams, oriental jazz, raqs-recordings and more - this time its a trip through the music, sounds and traditions of the Middle East. My covers can occasionally be somewhat misleading but this one sounds a little like it looks. I think.

Dream weapons present: EXPLORADORA C90

https://yadi.sk/d/ROK46JuRIhhy_A

An exploration of mysteries, melancholy, love, death, religion, good & evil... plus other important stuff. Exclusively and exquisitely sung or spoken by a cast of female voices (sans a duet and probably a mixed secondary school choir - or maybe two).

Exploradora is the Spanish or Portuguese word for "female explorer". Yes, like the Dora in that horrid animated educational show. Join inn on a voyage in sound where every continent on Mother Earth except Antarctica is explored, represented and heard.

In short: much beauty, but darkness lurks

Dream Weapons present: KAI TAK DESCENT C60 by Hong Kong Soul Radio

New guest mix for you all. This time from none other than Hong Kong Soul Radio:

"Hong Kong’s cultural identity was formed in the late 70s and 80s as Cantopop and Hong Kong films (including their soundtracks) became a cultural dominant force in Asia and Chinese communities around the world. Early Cantopop was hugely influenced by Western folk / pop of the 60s, Japanese pop / enka of the 60s and 70s, and Mandarin pop of the 40s and 50s. This mix attempts to connect all the dots and show the roots of what would eventually become the “Golden Era of Cantopop” in Hong Kong." - Hong Kong Soul Radio

Dream Weapons present: SOLEMN SOLEIL C60

Solemn Soleil is a playlist that perfectly exemplifies the Scandinavian summer. At times brilliantine and blazing hot, switching swiftly to downpours and seeking shelter in bars where all you want to do is listen to sad lullabies. There are some more well-known songs on this mix, it wasn't an attempt at obscurity, merely a nice collection to listen to depending on the weather.

Dream weapons present: YESTERLAND C90

Welcome (back) to Yesterland! I took the title from an online theme park for discontinued Disneyland attractions. Its actually a reworking of my third Pre-Rock mixtape* now improved in sound and flow with thirteen "brand new" and better tunes! Just about as fresh as a revisit to Yesterland can get...

One reason I love compiling music from the days of shellac is that the concept of «around the world in music» works like magic when the tunes are sonically unified in murky sound and hiss. Of course another appeal is that from the first half of the 20th century there's still so much unheard greatness out there waiting to get discovered.

Dream weapons present: EXORCISM C90

Its never the wrong season for some dark and haunting music is it? As you can probably guess this is a late 1970’s horror soundtrack. Apparently its from a terrifying story based on actual events. The back cover text says:

-Exorcism is a visually stunning, wonderfully gruesome tale of horror brimming with eerie beauty and hallucinatory wonder.

...Several ancient roman stone tablets are unearthed in a roman tomb located in Yugoslavia by a team of british archaeologists. They are brought back to a collection in a small university town in northern England. Years later a professor of greek solves the mystery of the magical symbols added to one specific tablet. While reading the spell out loud, a curse is cast on his own wife and two daughters and ancient demon spirits are unleashed…

Dream weapons present: STRANGENESSES C90

-In particle physics, strangeness («S») is a quantum number assigned the value −1 for one kind of quark, +1 for its antiquark, and 0 for all other quarks; the strangeness of a hadron is the sum of the values for the strangeness of its constituent quarks and antiquarks.

«hah! these tunes don’t sound particularly strange to a sonically experienced listener such as myself» you may think to yourself sometime during its first fifteen minutes. That’s because I’ve also taken into consideration the data from Large Hadron Collider that has recently proven the existence of a whole new class of subatomic particles, called Pentaquarks - formed of two up quarks, one down quark, one charm quark, and one anti-charm quark. Obviously.

Dream weapons present: ARIRANG MOUNTAIN PASS (SONG SEARCH VOL. 1) C60

Many moons ago a former flatmate had this wondrous 1960’s or early 70’s female fronted, South Korean Trot/folk-pop record that we used to spin all the time.

I can still hum a handful of the melodies and when I recognized another version of one of my favorite tunes among those - simply titled «Arirang», I figured I had a pretty good chance at locating the album in question. I had no such luck but instead I learned about a more than 600 year old folksong-tradition and the existence of countless variations/versions of Arirang(=the name of several mountain passes)-related wanderer songs telling tales of isolation and sorrow, unrequited love and killings of fair maidens mm… This whole tradition is actually considered South Koreas unofficial national anthem(s) and on UNESCO's list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity program.

-However, in my unsuccessful search for that original album I came across hours of enchanting folkpop and gentle trot-oldies from the same era instead. And after translating titles and artists names (which I hope I got more or less correct) from hangul to english I’ve grown fond of the korean letters and language + I’d sure love to cross those mountain passes someday.

Here’s my first hour of "accidental" song discoveries and if you fail to find anything to love, I’m afraid you better go see a cardiologist asap.

Dream Weapons present: STAY MY LOVE C60

This mix contains tracks from Moahaha and myself + one track contributed by Prabha Devi. I was going for a summery/folky mix, but as always, it ended up a bit slower and darker than initially planned. Heavy on folk and soundtracks, there should be an uplifting sentimental sense of joy to find here. Goes well with a bottle of red wine on a summer evening. Enjoy!

Dream Weapons present: SAD RAPTURE C60

"Sad Rapture is an ironic attempt to bring some melancholic joy to the summer months. Whether its spent listened to as a whole or certain tracks resonate with that inner listlessness, throw off the shackles of winter and baptise yourself in the soothing waters of strange songs. Salvation is not guaranteed, but there is a great white ocean and we must march towards it"

Dream weapons present: FARAWAY DANCES C90

It may not be far away from where you’re situated but its far away from my point of view. I could claim that here's my "Intercontinental Trip Through Sound» or something like that. Which of course means: a bunch of tunes from all over the place that has no real relation to each other. Anyway here's ninety minutes of old and new favorites mainly originating either from somewhere on the African continent or the middle-and far eastern parts of Asia.

Summer seems to have arrived and this is very much a «world party» mix of sorts, so I deem it fit to round off joining in on the call from the syrian banger Qoum Ya Nadim - or in english Get up, drinking companion!

Dream Weapons present: HEXADRINE C60

"Hexadrine is a slight departure from what I normally put out on Dream Weapons but i've been listening to a lot of meditative, strange, chants, prayers, mantras lately and it seemed time to make a compilation with some of that thrown in between other normal songs. Take it for what it is, listen to one song or the whole thing. It doesn't really matter anyway"

Dream weapons present: SOUTHWARDS C60

Spring is here! Southward, Sunward, Starward, and Skyward* were four norwegian-owned caribbean cruise ships that all started operating out of PortMiami in the late 60's-early 70’s. Southwards in this context means any musical tradition originating somewhere south of Miami.

Plenty of sunshine, dance and love - but with the latter comes heartbreak and desperation + there’s a couple of protest songs.

Matt Jencik is a musician based in Chicago. Jencik has been performing and recording since the early nineties in bands such as Hurl, Don Caballero, and more recently Slint, Papa M and Circuit Des Yeux. Dream weapons present: RETURN TO TRAPPIST-1 C90

NASA just recently discovered a whole new solar system filled with atleast seven "earth-sized planets" closely orbiting a dwarf star named TRAPPIST-1. And its only a mere 39 light years away!

On this sci-fi mix Planet Earth is mostly reduced to a toxic waste dump - which is why a spaceship is on its way to search for water or/and possible life on planet TRAPPIST-1b, c, d, e, f, g or h (preferably dumb life, not intelligent). So what is the crew’s soundtrack gonna be like? Cosmic grooves full of space bleeps and swooshes that's occasionally interrupted by meteor showers, comets and unidentified flying objects - obviously.

Dream Weapons present: MY DEAR LIFE C60 by Glockenspiel

For the first time in ages, we present a guestmix. Big thanks to mr Glockenspiel for his contribution!

- Sadhu Sadhu

My Dear Life is an eclectic mix of library music, French baroque pop, some obscure acid folk and some Beatlesque tunes. It makes for a dreamy and at times almost sacral listen. There’s not really a cohesive theme here, but I usually prefer it that way. You don’t really know what’s coming next, and that keeps you from drifting off and forget about what you listen to. Hope you enjoy this mix and share it with others.”
