Dream Weapons present: XMAS DELIGHTS VOL XII C90

This year I present to you an almost chronologically correct festive feast for the ears. Kicking things off with a nine decade ol' Danish ditty, it’s all cozy shellac-era oldies on the first half of my selection. Just like you’ve probably grown accustomed to by now. But for the second half I've put together a hodgepodge of heartwarming folksongs, a few loungy jazz/easy listening gems and some classical/early music stunners (nothing new from me about that either, I suppose:). All in a delightfully christmassy mode. On my twelfth ever year of Xmas-mix making, there’s also a first ever version of 12th Day Of Christmas included. I always liked the melody, yet I never really located a version I thought did it justice. But I thoroughly enjoy Geoff Bastow's afterski in the coctail lounge take on it.

Yulephiles and yulephobics alike: I’m wishing you all the jolliest season ever! I think we deserve a good one -Moahaha

Dream Weapons present: DARK SWEETS C90

My official mixtape "debut" from some time in late 2011. Until then I had only made compilations for myself, a few friends, former girlfriends and my wife. I’m thankful that oVo contacted me and invited me to join inn on सølγ שаябlɛş. This was the first of the two contributions I shared before it got shut down and Owl went incognito. Pretty much.

As the years have gone by I’ve found additional info and learned that what I thought was a mix filled exclusively with pre-rock 78RPM-era tunes has three songs from the 1960’s on it. But they sure sound older!

The version I'm sharing here is almost identical, but better sounding and hopefully better looking too. Here's how I presented it back when it was originally shared:

-Dark Sweets is actually a by-product of compiling hours and hours of 50 – 100 year old music from all over the world for a New Years Eve party. For this mix I singled out my favorites tunes among the obscure tracks ripped directly from 78’s. I’ve added a few hits from my own collection but tried to stay away from any tracks I’ve discovered on other comps and mixtapes. So this should be a unique listening experience for most of you -Moahaha

1. Ukulele Ike - Night Owl 1933
2. Zarah Leander - Jag Har Hört I Vindens Sus En Gång 1938
3. Victor Young - Hebrew Chant 1947
4. Cab Calloway and His Orchestra - Evenin’ 1933
5. Woody Herman - Marakesh 1955

8. Henry Hall - Home 1932
9. Sofia Vembo - Konta Sto Nilo 1938

11. Unidentified - Nights of Happiness

14. Nat Shilkret - Bolero 1930

16. Tak Shindo - Cherry Blossoms 1960
17. Waldjinah - Igm Kr Sunda Kelapa 1968

Dream Weapons present: XMAS DELIGHTS X C60

As I'll be busy for most of December, Christmas comes a little early this year.

-Xmas Delights volume X is a one hundred percent sentimental nostalgia trip containing nothing but the familiar sounds of unfamiliar oldies from yesteryear. Longing back and romanticising the past is simply the spirit of the season. Its been that way for generations before us. A century ago they were already singing about celebrating Christmas in «the good old fashioned way». Beautiful tunes and heartwarming songs from decades before most of us were born. That's how I prefer my music at this time of the year.

I don’t think we’ll be back with another mix until January. So for now, whether you like it or not: Merry Christmas or Happy Winter Festival and a Happy New Year to you all! -Moahaha

1 Fran Allison - Christmas in My Heart (1950)
2 Jose Melis - Hark! The Herald Angels Sing (1958)

5 American Radio Warblers With Preston Sellers - Skater’s Waltz (1951)
6 W.G.A.R. Range Riders - Winter Fell on the Range (1946)
7 Ambrose Orchestra with Vera Lynn - The Little Boy That Santa Claus Forgot (1937)
8 London String Quartet - Oh, Come, All Ye Faithful (1945)
9 Olga Guillot - Nochebuena (1947)
10 Seeburg Background Music - Coventry Carol (1963)

I didn’t have a lot of time compiling this year. But fortunately I had tons of 78rpm-gems from The Internet Archive lying about already. All lovingly «remastered and reshared" by internet's (probably the whole actual planet, really) no. 1 Christmas music expert Ernie (Not Bert) - which is where and how I first discovered them. This year I think about half the contents of this mix was originally discovered at his place. Huge thanks!

«Nostalgia for a time you've never known». These tunes will make you long for those carefree summers long before you were born. Yes its truly gorgeous stuff. Some of you may recognize the cover art’s resemblance to Drawn From Memory. That’s because this is its fraternal twin. So I might as well re-use what I wrote then.

Dream Weapons present: WIND-UP MYSTERY BOX C60

https://yadi.sk/d/un9NnHrJV-l8LA

Digging for shellac-gems in flea markets and second hand stores is always a hit or miss treasure hunt. But the right kind of seven to nine decades old recorded music conveys a sort of life-affirming joy, emotional intensity or wide-eyed beauty that appeals to me more than most contemporary stuff. This mix containing only music of the 78rpm-era is a tribute of sorts to my hand-cranked gramophone player as a "magical mystery box". World music from a different world. -Moahaha

Dream Weapons Present: DYING BREED C90

https://yadi.sk/d/qrSFH6FsJnSBOg

As it will take a little over a week from today till our next 20ft Radio special will broadcast, I decided I'd brush up on an almost eight year old C90 that was originally intended for सølγ שаябlɛş (which was shut down while I was on my finishing stages compiling this). A few of you may know this already - but here it is again, as an mp3 "special offer" for our blog-followers exclusively:

(Past Times Tunes For the End Times - Soothing Sounds of Shellac vol. II)

We all know mankind had its chance and blew it. But as far as I know we did create the greatest music in the universe, and that almost makes up for all the evil and stupidity. Here’s a little time capsule documenting a slice of musical expressions on planet earth from the early to mid 20th century. The sound of imaginary 78’s spinning should provide for some comfort and warmth while you prepare yourself for the very end. Enjoy! -Moahaha, December 2011

-it seems I've always had a tendency to try and make you think about the four horsemen of the apocalypse while listening to my nice collections of vintage tunes.

2.   Noor Jehan – Umangaen Dil Ke Machli 1947 India

Btw1: A few of these songs aren't as obscure and unheard as they once were.
Btw2: I remember that Žikva Nemeček song were among a bunch of old tunes that were suppposedly ripped from 78's, but it doesn't sound 70 years+ old. And there's a couple more I never located the recording date for.
Btw3: While re-editing I messed up the tracklist a little bit on the B-side. But as I've said before: hey its for free!

Dream weapons present: YESTERLAND C90

Welcome (back) to Yesterland! I took the title from an online theme park for discontinued Disneyland attractions. Its actually a reworking of my third Pre-Rock mixtape* now improved in sound and flow with thirteen "brand new" and better tunes! Just about as fresh as a revisit to Yesterland can get...

One reason I love compiling music from the days of shellac is that the concept of «around the world in music» works like magic when the tunes are sonically unified in murky sound and hiss. Of course another appeal is that from the first half of the 20th century there's still so much unheard greatness out there waiting to get discovered.
