Dream Weapons present: DAYS & NIGHTS IN THE GHETTO C90

I(’m an amateur) DJ every once in a while. And lately I’ve been doing these more or less monthly vintage Soul nights. Focusing on that glorious late 60’s - early 70’s era when sweet Soul Music got progressive and fused itself with Psychedelic Rock, Jazz, Funk, African music and whatnot… Often with orchestral arrangements, ethnic percussion and various keyboards. But never forgetting to groove. I love it, and so it seems, does the people attending.

Needless to say there’s A LOT of practically unheard gems waiting to be discovered. These are all some of my recently discovered, favorite obscurities. About 3/4th of this selection have already been - or will be played at my own club nights. This means no balladeering, and that you can pretty much dance your way though the whole mix. If you feel like it. I was thinking that the days in the ghetto reflects the songs of struggle, while the night-time is playtime. This should be a fun ride for you all. Enjoy! -Moahaha

-This mix/compilation wouldn't have been half as great if it wasn't for the AMAZING FunkMySoul website. If you enjoy this, you should most definitely check out their shares - and spend some time over there.

1 Kay Gees - Ain`t No Time Part 1
2 General Crook - What Time it is (vocal)
3 Barbara Stant - Shadow In Your Footsteps

*Also: Upon relistening; Tenison Stephens - Don't Rip Me Off  (link in bold) - sounded lower in the mix than the songs surrounding it. It truly deserves to be enjoyed like the hard hitting gem it actually is, so I fixed that for you on this new file - for that song specifically.

Dream Weapons present: SATURDAY AT THE SWEET SPOT C90

As some of you may have noticed, it’s been dead quiet here for a while. Unfortunately I have less time to spend on this blog now - and in the foreseeable future. The good news is that Crazy Monkey has got more guest mixes up his sleeve for us, so there will be some activity here.

But the other evening I felt like giving you a sign of life. Which had me compiling a follow-up-mix out of a list of various jazz I have collected. Saturdays at the Sweet Spot is busier than Sundays, and this is of course Sunday at the Sweet Spot’s livelier companion piece. A little more grooves, tempo and intensity, but otherwise in the same ballpark as its sibling. Just a little something for you melophiles to enjoy -Moahaha

Btw: While the design is very 1950's, the musical content is about three thirds seventies, two sixties tracks and one from the eighties. I just love the esthetics of that era.

1 Jimmy Heath - Heritage Hum
2 Enrico Rava - Pupa O Crisalide
3 Neil Ardley - Folk Dance No 2
4 Sadik Hakim - Down by the Ferry Dock
5 John Lee & Gerry Brown - Rise On
6 Phil Upchurch - Sausalito Blues
7 Oregon - Margueritte
8 Donald Byrd - Elijah (version without vocals)
9 Hadley Caliman - Quadrivium

10 Johnny Scott Quintet - Variation 3 - Flute
11 Mal Waldron - Home Again (alt. version)
12 The Descendants Of Mike And Phoebe - Chick Chick
13 Patrice Gelsi - Chant D’Ailleurs
14 Cedric Im Brooks - Africa Calling
15 Richard Davis - Milktrain
16 Afro-Blues Quintet Plus One - South Side Habit/Mirror Image
17 Gunther Fischer Quintett - Erinnerung an Jürgen H.

Dream Weapons present: POLLINATION C90 by Crazy Monkey

Crazy Monkey, whom I collaborated with on Gatto Nero Di Notte, has compiled a guest mix, and it’s a lovely one.

Btw: For something like three or four years by now, every second and fourth Wedensday (at 07:00 pm, local time) each month, we have a 90 minute spot on Radio AlHara. Today Pollination fills those ninety minutes. Our compilations are a nice fit, and it's a great thing to be a part of. I just occurred to me that I should remember to mention it every once in a while.

About the mix in CM's own poetic words:

For us, inhabitants of the far south, the end of the cold season marks a very important time of year, turning the silvery stained skies into a glowing intense blue, and with that, life reappears proud of its incomparable beauty. This compilation was born to honor this eternal cycle, and thus accompany the emergence of the new living beings that adorn our surroundings, reciting to us the eternal verses of nature.

As a scientist but also as a conscious human, observing and caring for nature has been a part of my life since early childhood, and that's what I want to capture in this selection of sounds to share with those who also feel that a whisper from the forest or a gentle caress from the ocean are things worth highlighting -Crazy Monkey

Dream Weapons present: COLD COMFORT C90

Happy New Year everyone! I certainly hope that this will be a happy, new, year. Now a few vague words as to what to expect from Cold Comfort:

-The chilling warmth or warming chills of hauntingly beautiful music and voices. Suitable for January here up north. About 50/50 songs and instrumentals. A mood piece of spellbinding Folk, traditional and Modern Classical (all chamber music, really), Art Pop and other neighboring sounds that seem related. Simultaneously celestial and earthy somehow I think. I’m not certain whether it’s good or bad, but this mix feels very much like where I’m at these days. I like it here though -Moahaha
