Dream Weapons present: DAYS & NIGHTS IN THE GHETTO C90

I(’m an amateur) DJ every once in a while. And lately I’ve been doing these more or less monthly vintage Soul nights. Focusing on that glorious late 60’s - early 70’s era when sweet Soul Music got progressive and fused itself with Psychedelic Rock, Jazz, Funk, African music and whatnot… Often with orchestral arrangements, ethnic percussion and various keyboards. But never forgetting to groove. I love it, and so it seems, does the people attending. 

Needless to say there’s A LOT of practically unheard gems waiting to be discovered. These are all some of my recently discovered, favorite obscurities. About 3/4th of this selection have already been - or will be played at my own club nights. This means no balladeering, and that you can pretty much dance your way though the whole mix. If you feel like it. I was thinking that the days in the ghetto reflects the songs of struggle, while the night-time is playtime. This should be a fun ride for you all. Enjoy! -Moahaha

Dream Weapons present: SATURDAY AT THE SWEET SPOT C90

As some of you may have noticed, it’s been dead quiet here for a while. Unfortunately I have less time to spend on this blog now - and in the foreseeable future. The good news is that Crazy Monkey has got more guest mixes up his sleeve for us, so there will be some activity here. 

But the other evening I felt like giving you a sign of life. Which had me compiling a follow-up-mix out of a list of various jazz I have collected. Saturdays at the Sweet Spot is busier than Sundays, and this is of course Sunday at the Sweet Spot’s livelier companion piece. A little more grooves, tempo and intensity, but otherwise in the same ballpark as its sibling. Just a little something for you melophiles to enjoy -Moahaha

Btw: While the design is very 1950's, the musical content is about three thirds seventies, two sixties tracks and one from the eighties. I just love the esthetics of that era.

It’s my great honor and pleasure to introduce Crazy Monkey - who runs two excellent music blogs: The Flying Zoo and Distorted Cortex - with this, our first (but not the last) collaboration together. As I had learned about his current musical passions, I suggested we compiled a Library-mix together. Here’s fourteen highly spirited grooves from the wide world of Jazz, 1967-1984. It’s been quite some time since last I shared one of these, and the gems have been piling up. Although the bulk of my selection originates from the West, many of the tunes are inspired by various folk traditions of the East. As often before, I might add. A lot of rhythmic/percussive music feels like being taken on a ride, and when the music quiets down or loosen up - it’s like they’re wandering along. And I love a lot of tunes that feature these qualities. Don’t we all? As you might have guessed: here’s another «East meets West» sort of album containing exactly what the title says.

-I actually got couple of C90’s ready that I have to hold on to for a little while. I wouldn’t want to keep you waiting to too long, so I threw this together from a long list of Oriental Jazz and that sort of stuff. No, I’ve not compiled the musical equivalent to a volcanic eruption. It’s closer to the polished rocks or handmade figures made from the volcanic glass that naturally occurs when lava rapidly cools. Yes, it’s another mix of fusions between the Jazz and various styles of music that seemingly everyone was into during the 1970’s. Sometimes resembling World Music, sometimes spiritual, often groovin’, always radiating warmth. Humankind at its very best -Moahaha

If this was a person, «A hot mess» would perfectly sum up these ninety minutes of music. It’s a fun and colorful collection of thirty songs. In that sense much like the misleading, but relatively fun and colorful cover art. Stylistically a little all over the place and geographically from all over the world. Dream Weapons present: THE TWIN EARTH C60

 

 -the Twin Earth is just me compiling in easy mode. Meaning another hour of Soul Jazz, Jazz Fusion, Latin Jazz etc...  Music recorded in between 1969-1981 that seamlessly grooves along from one tune to the next. Each new track has something unique to offer but I also feel that they are somewhat unified. Super likable soundscapes of the sort that I’m pretty much always in the mood for. There’s simply an astounding amount of unheard gems (primarily) from the seventies in these genres for me to choose from. Yes, I know I’ve said this before, but that's because it’s true -Moahaha 

Btw: Life is even more complicated than I am used to (but I'm good), and I'm not really in a "music discovery mode" nowadays. Also I have less time to make these mixes as well. Every time I've shared a mix lately, I've been thinking that it will take (quite) a while until I come up with a next one. This time it's no different. But I've been wrong many times before, so who knows:)

Dream Weapons present: CITY LIGHTS C90

For as long as I can recall I’ve loved those gorgeous string arrangements, the lighthearted playful sensuality, the synths and the grooves of Disco. Yet I never felt like had the overview or knowledge to compile a mix. But now I went along and did it anyway. During the years these 19 tracks were recorded: from 1975 to 1982: Disco was a global phenomena. So there’s literally a whole world of largely unheard gems out there to discover. Locating different takes from different scenes is most definitely part of the charm. Some funky, jazzy and organic takes, while others goes hard on the synths and drum machines. But always peppy, fun and... life-affirming -Moahaha

Unique to Japan, a jazu/jazz kissa are spaces where jazz music is played for dedicated listening rather than as backgrund music. As their "local" vibrant jazz scene feel somewhat overlooked and underappreciated, I thought I'd compile some of my favorite gems from 1970-1977. Quite similar to my previous jazz compilations really, except that’s it’s all originating from the Land of Rising Sun -Moahaha

Here’s another hour of mostly laidback 1970’s jazz grooves. Spiritual, funky, eastern tinged, electrified, psychedelic etc... Yes, most of you should know this part of me by now. Seemingly I can discover gems such as these and present them to you for the rest of my life. Dream Weapons present: 2x45 MINUTES OF MUSIC BY STELVIO CIPRIANI (C90)

Originally compiled eleven years ago. It's a little cleaned up, but 95% identical. Here's most of what I wrote in 2012:

Whenever Stelvio; the hippest cat of all the italian soundtrack composers really nailed it, his approach fits my tastes just perfectly. Lots of heavy percussion and strings, seriously groovin' cembaloriffs,  deep dark moog, lovable melodies and tons of suspense... The music is selected from 26 different albums out of the 35-36 I got. Track no. 10 is composed by Cipriani and recorded by Goblin. Track 14 and 15 are taken from Library albums, the forner of the two by Stelvio's own band: Blue Sharks -Moahaha

Dream Weapons present: THE HOT SPACE C60

 

The concept of space in music is often associated with cold and desolate electronic soundscapes. However The Hot Space calls for far jazzier vibes. More specifically a 1970’s jazzgroove that's electrified with Moogs & stuff. By now you know I love this kind of stuff, and I will never grow tired of discovering yet another unheard gem from that time period. It feels like home somehow. Dream Weapons present: BITE THE DUST C60

I was sick for about half of March, and in that period I’ve almost finished eight mixtapes (including Mothers & Daughters and The Shrine). So that’s the reason why I’ve been on a roll here lately. 

-Anyway I wanted to collect some songs for you that grooves really deep and hard. The cover kind of look a like a silly disaster movie poster or something like that, doesn’t it? Bite the Dust does have a soundtrack-feel, but perhaps in a more biker movie way. Mainly just tons of left field semi-psychedelic bops and bangers - that sometimes even rocks! A fun and entertaining mix I think. Like Cosmic Carpet Ride or The Wild Ones on steroids -Moahaha

You may not be able to tell from my shares, but I love the hell out of 60-70’s funky soul music and listen to it all the time. It still feels somewhat a little outside my «field of expertise» (whatever that may be), so I guess I’ve l haven’t had a full mix in me until now. Well, actually I posted a Soulside Journey C90 ten years ago which is probably my least interesting mix ever. This has the same title but the cover and all the songs are new. Art has its triptychs, religion has its trinities and Prabha Devi has finally finished the unholy collection of three Sevens. In the very early days of Dream Weapons, Seven Daemons was released. Seven Rays came along a little later, and now finally the penultimate chapter is complete: Seven Sutras.

Though a Sutra is more of poetic roots, the name sounded evocative and fit with the overall theme of "exotic oriental" that runs through the spine of the mix, delving sideways into some Brazilian girl groups and even Mauritius rock. Largely instrumental, but collected to be listened to as a whole album, turn it on during an extra dull winter day and let it brighten up the living room for an hour at least -Prabha Devi
