Dream Weapons present: SATURDAY AT THE SWEET SPOT C90

As some of you may have noticed, it’s been dead quiet here for a while. Unfortunately I have less time to spend on this blog now - and in the foreseeable future. The good news is that Crazy Monkey has got more guest mixes up his sleeve for us, so there will be some activity here. 

But the other evening I felt like giving you a sign of life. Which had me compiling a follow-up-mix out of a list of various jazz I have collected. Saturdays at the Sweet Spot is busier than Sundays, and this is of course Sunday at the Sweet Spot’s livelier companion piece. A little more grooves, tempo and intensity, but otherwise in the same ballpark as its sibling. Just a little something for you melophiles to enjoy -Moahaha

Btw: While the design is very 1950's, the musical content is about three thirds seventies, two sixties tracks and one from the eighties. I just love the esthetics of that era.

There is quite literally an infinite supply of unheard musical treasures of the past to dig for, discover, love and to share. Here’s fourteen highly spirited grooves from the wide world of Jazz, 1967-1984. It’s been quite some time since last I shared one of these, and the gems have been piling up. Although the bulk of my selection originates from the West, many of the tunes are inspired by various folk traditions of the East. As often before, I might add. I’ve always had a soft spot for musical fusions of this sort.  It never fails to lift my spirits -Moahaha

A lot of rhythmic/percussive music feels like being taken on a ride, and when the music quiets down or loosen up - it’s like they’re wandering along. And I love a lot of tunes that feature these qualities. Don’t we all? As you might have guessed: here’s another «East meets West» sort of album containing exactly what the title says.

-I actually got couple of C90’s ready that I have to hold on to for a little while. I wouldn’t want to keep you waiting to too long, so I threw this together from a long list of Oriental Jazz and that sort of stuff. Actually I don’t think I ever spent less time compiling a mix than with this. But it’s still sixteen great tunes that go really well together. Enjoy! -Moahaha

No, I’ve not compiled the musical equivalent to a volcanic eruption. It’s closer to the polished rocks or handmade figures made from the volcanic glass that naturally occurs when lava rapidly cools. Yes, it’s another mix of fusions between the Jazz and various styles of music that seemingly everyone was into during the 1970’s. Sometimes resembling World Music, sometimes spiritual, often groovin’, always radiating warmth. Humankind at its very best -Moahaha

Dream Weapons present: INTO BLISS C90

 

 

One reason as to why I compile all these jazz-mixes of pure bliss and no atonal blowouts just occurred to me: This is largely how I present jazz to others in real life. Very few people I know are as deeply into all kinds of music as myself. Anything too free, avantgarde or invasive will just get in the way of conversation - and make them uncomfortable. Hell, in regards to my family, even the jazz collected here would give me weird looks. But my friends wouldn’t mind this. And I obviously love it, so «Into Bliss» is an attempt to… please everyone (except for my family) -Moahaha

Unique to Japan, a jazu/jazz kissa are spaces where jazz music is played for dedicated listening rather than as backgrund music. As their "local" vibrant jazz scene feel somewhat overlooked and underappreciated, I thought I'd compile some of my favorite gems from 1970-1977. Quite similar to my previous jazz compilations really, except that’s it’s all originating from the Land of Rising Sun -Moahaha

Ten Portals of Initiation to what? To some spiritual jazz and the likes, originating from some time in between 1970-1980, of course. It’s not as deep as it may appear. I simply kept the cover art’s original title and added a «Ten» in front. I’m afraid to credit the original artist, as I once got in trouble for doing so (but I think it’s public domain). The musical content will probably feel like the natural continuation of a dozen or so previous jazz-themed mixes of mine (to those of you already familiar with Dream Weapons). But the tunes are as exiting and wondrous as ever before -Moahaha

Music for whenever life in itself offers a bit of a challenge. Half a century old jazz sounds in various shapes and colors is my main safe haven in music. Needless to say I listen to this stuff A LOT. Neither avantgarde nor easy listening. Free spirited but with hooks and grooves. No other theme here really. A tribute to the divine healing powers of listening to musicians that plays together simply for the sake of creating music - together (at least that is how I interpret it) -Moahaha

Dream Weapons present: LAST CELESTIAL NOMAD C90

 Yusef Abdul Lateef (William Emanuel Huddleston) 1920 – 2013

So happy new year I guess. Trying out Pixeldrain (looks very promising to me. Let me know how it works for you) with an old compilation of mine. This Yusef Lateef-tribute was originally shared back in January 2014. The link has been dead for years, so it was about time for a re-up. My lazy CD compilation-like design makes this appear somewhat cheap and disposable but it's actual content is really, really nice.

As far as I know, all our old mixes and shares have at least one active link. No more Mixcloud, Mediafire, pCloud or Yandex (Btw: did the uloz.to links work for you?) for me, but I'm sure I'll be back with some C60's & C90's nevertheless. Anyway, here's what I wrote:

Yusef left us the 23rd of December 2013 and it seems dying is the only effective career move for an ageing artist, so his music will undoubtly get some extra attention in the next couple of years.

Over the last couple of years openminded jazz fans of blogland and elsewhere have been enjoying a flood of long forgotten spiritual and exotic jazz collections, shared 'n rare vinylrips and re-releases. For reasons unknown the author, multi-instrumentalist, soul brother, the true «world jazz» pioneer and perhaps Mr. Spiritual himself Yusef Lateef is sometimes mentioned as an influence, but rarely included.

Although an excellent tenor saxophonist leaving us plenty of classic post bop, swing and third stream compositions and recordings to discover and enjoy, I wanted to compile 90 minutes focusing on what really made him sonically stand out from the very beginning. In 1957 alone, our sound searching genius recorded material for 13 soloalbums (all worth having). Along with the more conventional jazz numbers middle-eastern, far east, spiritual & indian themes as well as his gorgeous flute, oboe and bassoon-playing and use of unconventional instruments like bamboo flute, shanai, shofar, xun, arghul, koto, gong, earthboard + a Seven-Up bottle and a balloon is already there.

On Last Celestial Nomad you'll actually get the impression Yusef played his flute and oboe (and balloon) more often than he played his saxophone. In reality its the other way around. Although representative for my favorite kind of Yusef sounds these 19 highly spirited compositions from 19 different albums recorded over a period of 15 years (1957-1972) is not an attempt to make a best of, or a representative introduction. Its like a mixtape with a unifying theme using material from one artist exclusively. Enjoy!

The music of the spheres is recently proven by astrophysicists to be jazz. This is actually the first out of three (or maybe four) oriental/spiritual, latin space-fusions and all that jazz in the vein of The High Priestess and Fourth World. Yeah I decided to keep on compiling until I ran out of unique ensembles and their more or less unheard tunes of awesomeness - and I have A LOT of gems to choose from. Jazz was  undoubtedly the greatest musical invention of the 20th century and here’s the first sixteen staggering variations of what it sounded like -Moahaha

Dream weapons present: RITES AND PASSAGES C60

My idea of tunes for tripping, meditation, worship, rituals and other spiritual practices. But like myself you can just listen while leading your everyday life doing anything or nothing. I think all great music has the potential to mentally transcend you to places you’re not physically at. But nothing transports you along to other dimensions quite like pounding flutes and swirling percussion (or was it the other way around). 

I’m probably overemphasizing this whole transcendental-vibe a little. Among other things you’ll immediately notice that there’s normal jazz here too - albeit of the orientally & spiritually oriented kind.

Mainly spiritual jazz - including some spirited latin and oriental fusions. Or just some jazz gems I enjoy. I also dug up some of my favorite jazz poetry tunes (all with musical accompany) and placed them in between.
