The Flying Zoo & Dream Weapons present: GATTO NERO DI NOTTE C90

It’s my great honor and pleasure to introduce Crazy Monkey - who runs two excellent music blogs: The Flying Zoo and Distorted Cortex - with this, our first (but not the last) collaboration together. As I had learned about his current musical passions, I suggested we compiled a Library-mix together. It made for a perfect starting point that got even better when we allowed ourselves a more inclusive approach. The end result is the best imagined Giallo/Horror soundtrack ever made! Beauty and grooves that glow in the dark.

-Welcome to these almost forgotten worlds of mystery and suspense where you can explore the secret passages that lead to the unknown, walking the fine line that separates life from transmutation. Dream Weapons present: NOTHING TO FEAR C60

… but fear itself. But apart from the title, Nothing to Fear isn’t inspired by this famous quote from Franklin D. Roosevelt's first inauguration speech. I undertook the task of compiling an hour of tunes that could resemble a collection of horror/giallo score music - while using tracks that aren’t from such films. In fact only two of the songs are lifted from a soundtrack at all.

The eerie beauty of themes composed for vintage horror movies has always held a special place in my music loving heart. While taken out of their visual context, the melodies tend to radiate dreamy melancholy and sadness, rather than something truly sinister. Contemporary scores rarely give me anything, but music seemingly inspired by the aforementioned «golden age» is still being made. So the lion’s share of bands and artists featured, are actually from today’s era.

In a nutshell, my Halloween-mix comes a little early this year -Moahaha

1 Scoen & Cicci Santucci  - Condizionamento
2 Bruce Smeaton - Ascent Music (Reprise)
3 Randy M. Salo - Victor Wants Out
4 André Popp - The Chant Of Mystery
5 Kinetoscope Ensemble - A Boy's Best Friend
6 L'Albero Del Veleno - Postlude - Moros
7 Gino Peguri - Il Ricercato
8 Giadar - 1977

10 Non Credo - Gumption
11 Warrington-Runcorn New Town Development Plan - Across the Jubilee Bridge
12 Masaaki Yoshida - There Will Come Soft Rains
13 Klaus Morlock - Ephemera

Dream Weapons present: PRESENT TENSE C60

I have to admit that I’m a little proud of this one. It is the sort of mixtape I would have loved for someone else to have compiled - and for me to discover. Twelve compositions released in 2024 and two from 2023 is about as present tense that I’m capable of. Actually it’s way beyond my capabilities in that regard. I made a  playlist titled «Strange Beauty», and somehow this hour of pristine musical gems materialized from within it. Almost.

-Whether leaning mostly toward the traditional, experimental, electronic or ambient - all fourteen compositions can safely be filed under «Modern Classical». In retrospect, I might as well have kept my playlist-title, as these are all strange beauties to my ears -Moahaha

1 Alice Hebborn - Saisons - Mouvement 2
2 Laura Masotto - Dark Horse
3 Bruno Sanfilippo - The Feast of Crows
4 Christopher Cerrone - Beaufort Scales. I & II
5 Malcolm Pardon - Side Effects

Dream Weapons present: NOCTURNAL C90

«Through the darksome forest roam, Luna breaks through oaks and bushes» is a quote from Goethe's poem «The Beautiful Night». I wanted to capture a vibe like that in music somehow. Dream Weapons present: SILENT AS THE GRAVE C60

What do you know it seems I had time for one more mix this month after all! While collecting songs for Sounds in the Night I sort of made an additional soundtrack-like mix without really noticing. These 23 tunes are selected from a long list of instrumentals that were too moody to fit in between the songs on my slightly more festive Halloween mix, posted earlier this month. Silent as the Grave is filled with the wonderfully eerie melodies that has made me fall in love with 1960-1980’s horror/giallo moviescores moreso than the actual horror/giallo movies of the era (sorry moviebuffs). To me music doesn’t get more beautiful than this. At least not right now while typing and listening through before posting  -Moahaha

Btw: Half the selection is actually Library/Production Music. And as long as the mood felt right, I haven’t taken into consideration what kind of movie genre the films these tracks were lifted from. But as you can see just by looking at the titles, they are primarily from the correct genres anyway.

1 Renato Anselmi - Oracolo
2 Enrico Simonetti - Arance Amare
3 Franco Piana - Magician
4 Nico Fidenco - The Dark Side of the Soul II
5 Alessandro Alessandroni - Ritratto

Dream Weapons present: SOUNDS IN THE NIGHT C60

Well hello darkness, my old friend. A spooky All Hallow’s Eve-mix that doesn’t set out to actually scare you. A little doom and gloom for the whole family to enjoy -Moahaha

Dream Weapons present: SORCERER C60

Soft focus aside, here at Dream Weapons we love the strange and eerie just as much. Sometimes even more. A mysterious and seductive kind of strange filled with beauty and suspense that is. The music presented on Sorcerer isn’t really as far out as that crazy-ass shaman featured on the cover suggests. I simply had to make use that one-of-a-kind-painting at some point. I'm trying to recapture the feel and mode of a hauntingly surreal ghost story that I only vaguely remember. Or maybe it actually happened. I'm not certain -Moahaha

1 Osiris - Fioretti

Dream Weapons present: VERSES WITHOUT WORDS C60

Eight years ago I posted a Verses Without Words 2xC60 (the links have been dead for years) that had radically different covers and contained 40 songs in total. I suppose this compressed version is about 35% identical to the original. Its so differnt that I couldn't really repost what I originally wrote, so here's a newly written text as well:

-Verses Without Words contains 22 tunes with nothing but my favorite kind of musical lyricism: wordless vocal. Perhaps unsurprisingly this means almost a 1/3rd of its content is lifted from various italian b-movie soundtracks. Plus there's some library music-delights. But there’s also a few jazzy scats, a trio of esoteric folk songs, a little exotica and a memorable visit to Bollywood. A couple of downright scary numbers (like in the video underneath), but largely packed with lovely melodies and voices of otherworldly beauty. Still it does resemble the killer score to some forgotten giallo or fantastique-film. In other words, enough words -Moahaha

1 Fiorenzo Carpi - Mariale
2 Isabelle Aubret – Casa Forte
3 Amadeo Tiommasi - Shake Tragico
4 Merit Hemmingson – Vindarna Sucka Uti Skogarna
5 Kalyanji Anandji – Theme Music (Sad)

Dream Weapons present: TREMBLEMENT C90

An almost identical version of this was originally posted elsewhere in 2014. The link has been dead for years and I think it deserves to be available. I had actually lost my own version, so I had to remake it from scratch.

-I just wanted the cover to have a similar feel as some of those strange 1970's films and books that Ben at Toys and Techniques used to present way back when the internet was still young and promising. Tremblement translates into something like tremor or trembling. It felt like the perfect name for a slightly pretentious, long forgotten arthouse obscurtity as well as describing the deep quivering bass-rumbles that dominates this mixtape. Everything from avantgarde, garage-rock, 20th century classical, library-grooves, psychedelic backwards-singing and jazz of all sorts here -Moahaha

1. A. Linstaedt - Pounding City
2. Guido & Mauritzio De Angelis - Salt Lake Feelings

Dream Weapons present: IT WELCOMES YOU C90

The three-day observance of Allhallowtide is upon us - which felt like the perfect excuse to locate and ever so slightly rework/improve my pre-dream weapons «horrorscore-mix». It was a pleasantly unpleasant revisitation containing one dark or dimly lit gem after the other. I think you might enjoy it too. Back in 2015 I wrote:

-I went for scores with a Fabio Frizzi/John Carpenter/Goblin sort of synthified keyboard driven approach but (largely) avoided all those themes «everyone» already knows - such as Suspiria, (the original) Halloween, The Beyond etc. There's probably just as much melancholic beauty as there is dark electrofunk here. Some of you are probably familiar with a few of these tunes already - but you never heard them presented like this -Moahaahaahaaaaa…!

…Oh, the title is inspired by The Creepshow Welcomes You (opening titles) in combination with the modern day classic It Follows. The thought of a something evil that appears welcoming at first was sort of chilling.

Dream Weapons present: LORD DEATH’S COUNTING SONG C90

This whole idea sort of came to me while listening through an impressive stack of shares on Die or D.I:Y? containing music by (occasionally perverted, mass murderous) cults and all sorts of far out religious music.

-I went about compiling these ninety minutes pretty much like I’d direct a low budget exploitaiton film about a wacko cult (leader): A beautiful intro with happy children holding hands while dancing, laughing and singing in a field - then the screen goes black, a delightfully eerie main theme starts and the title appears in awesome blood red fonts... or something like that. After the whole cast, producer, director-routine, there’ll be a section showing seemingly innocent everyday life in the cult… Long beards and hair, bellbottoms, singing, nudity/orgies and Jesus sandals… But because they are batshit crazy things take a nasty turn. From there on it’ll just be a bunch of (beautifully shot) semirelated disturbing scenes until all hell breaks loose and everyone dies. End titles. Hey, I never claimed that I knew how to direct!

It depends a little on where you'd draw the line but I suppose less than half of the performers here were actual cult members. Whether scary, naive, beautiful or pure evil its mostly some kind of religious music and mainly Christian (+some occult, pagan etc... stuff). A handful of tunes are «secular/neutral» but moodwise appropriate soundscapes I simply needed to create a killer mix for you all -Moahaha

20ft Radio & Dream Weapons present: CURTAIN CALL C60

Our third mix for 20ft Radio is a murder mystery thriller-horror movie (with lots of nudity)-soundtrack. An overload of dark grooves and stunning melodies like in those classic 70’s giallo-films. This mix is partly made from nicking killer tunes from largely forgotten B-movies - in combination with some library music-favourites + a couple of "cinematographic songs" that just seemed to fit in perfectly. Enjoy!

Dream weapons present: EXORCISM C90

Its never the wrong season for some dark and haunting music is it? As you can probably guess this is a late 1970’s horror soundtrack. Apparently its from a terrifying story based on actual events. The back cover text says:

-Exorcism is a visually stunning, wonderfully gruesome tale of horror brimming with eerie beauty and hallucinatory wonder.

...Several ancient roman stone tablets are unearthed in a roman tomb located in Yugoslavia by a team of british archaeologists. They are brought back to a collection in a small university town in northern England. Years later a professor of greek solves the mystery of the magical symbols added to one specific tablet. While reading the spell out loud, a curse is cast on his own wife and two daughters and ancient demon spirits are unleashed…

Dream Weapons present: GHOSTIN THROUGH NEITHERLANDS C90

or

Not sure this title sits well with any native speaker of english but it makes sense to me. A ghost story of the sort that might have given you a good scare as a child, but maybe not so much if revisited as a grown up. It won't give you nightmares anymore but the dense, haunting atmosphere is still present. Childhood memories both from experience and fiction when magic and the supernatural felt just as real as reality.
